HISTORY

The history of the Church begins with Jesus Christ, who lived in the 1st century in Judea. After His crucifixion and resurrection, His close followers, known as disciples or apostles, began spreading His teachings. The Church officially began on the day of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit came upon the apostles, encouraging them to speak to people of many nations and languages. This marked the beginning of the Christian community.

In 1517, Martin Luther, a German monk, criticized the Catholic Church for corruption, especially the selling of indulgences. His actions started the Protestant Reformation, a movement that led many Christians to break away from the Catholic Church and form new groups like the Lutherans, Anglicans, and Calvinists. These new groups are called Protestant churches.

In the 19th and 20th centuries, Christianity became a global religion. Churches helped in areas like education, health, and social justice. New Christian groups like Baptists, Methodists, and Pentecostals grew quickly. The Church also faced challenges like wars, changing values, and scientific discoveries but continued to influence society.

Today, the Church is made up of many different groups and traditions—Catholic, Orthodox, and many kinds of Protestant denominations. Though they may differ in beliefs and practices, many churches work together for peace, justice, and service to others. The Church continues to be a part of people’s lives, offering faith, hope, and support in a fast-changing world.
